Our Success Stories

UNSAI through its project “Education My Right” has supported over 20 rural girls with disabilities to transit from primary level to Secondary level and Tertiary/ Vocational. Our biggest milestone, A rural youth girl with intellectual disability (24+ years) from a very poor family had been denied opportunity to register for Primary Leaving Examinations(PLE) for many years in school on a misconception of teachers that she has nothing to write, yet she was so ambitious of sitting PLE like her peers. At one point she forced herself in the Examination room crying and was chased because she was not registered. Finally, UNSAI supported the school to register her as a learner with special needs, Government of Uganda sent support specialist for her. Amazingly she passed and now very happy in secondary school. This achievement has changed the community attitude toward girls with disability and the right to Education.

Literacy: Supporting adolescent girls and young women to acquire literacy skills. The "Peaceful Communities" program, part of the Uganda National Self-Advocacy Initiative (UNSAI), did win the UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy in 2023. This program, led by Dorothy Nakato Mubezi, focuses on empowering marginalized communities (women and girls with disabilities) through literacy, particularly in rural areas and among out-of-school youth. The initiative was inspired by Dorothy's mother's experience in teaching her co-wife to read and write, which strengthened their relationship and paved the way for greater empowerment.
